Curly Hair 101

Every day, 65% of the world’s population is styling their curly hair, with many not entirely understanding the science behind their curls and what is best for them.

Once you understand what makes curly hair tick, you’ll be embracing your curls or waves in no time – cleansing, conditioning, styling and treating your curls with confidence!

What makes a good curl

Moisture and hydration are your curls best friends! It’s so important that curls are hydrated and moisturised as without this vital component, curly hair will appear looser, undefined, frizzier, more tangled and uncontrollable.

PRODUCTS

When it comes to curly hair products, seek out ones that moisturise and hydrate. It’s important to consider moisturising, wet style, dry style and finishing. Not just one product will do the job, and the correct products will leave the hair feeling hydrated and soft, with the curls absorbing the products.

Avoid products that dry out or strip the hair of its natural oils, instead opt for products that assist in activating the natural curl pattern through moisturising and hydration.

STYLING

To begin, style hair when wet – DO NOT towel or t-shirt dry! This will agitate the curl and produce dreaded frizz.

Let your products complement whichever styling process you undertake, as styling with the correct products, not touching the curl too much when diffusing, and scrunching out the wet styling product once dry will ensure your hair will curl on its own, or with minimal effort. This is when you know the products are working!

MAINTENANCE

The key to curly hair is to simplify the maintenance of it and don’t over-complicate it!

Don’t mess with the curl too much; touching separates the curl and causes frizz. Selecting the right products to help refresh the curl the next day makes a huge difference too.

It’s also important to shampoo regularly; leaving it too long between shampoos can cause irritation on the scalp and product build-up on the hair.

What are sulfates, parabens & silicones? Why they are in products and what they do?

Why we are using these ingredients in products? There are some methods that recommend avoiding these products, but why? We need to understand what they do:

SULFATES

Sulfates are just one type of surfactant. They are used in shampoos to help lather, yet also to remove dirt and oil from the scalp. Different grades and types of sulfates are used in many applications.

SILICONES

Silicones act as emollients, they add shine, slip and lubrication, comb-ability, reduce friction, wear and breakage, seals in moisture to the hair shaft and out. They are also regarded as preventing hair from frizz in high humidity. They can be water soluble or evaporate when drying the hair. They don’t react with colour but will build-up on the hair if you are using every day without regular cleansing.

De Lorenzo uses a variety of ingredients to ensure we achieve a beautiful result without compromising the quality of the hair, environment and other living creatures. All our ingredients have been proven safe for use as directed.

First steps to creating the perfect curls

Curly hair lacks moisture so it is important that the hair is hydrated. A treatment program may be recommended to ensure the hair is soaking up enough hydration.
