Hair Unlimited is a limited edition collectable coffee table book of hair works with all proceeds going towards bowel cancer research at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia. With 154 pages of beautiful black and white beauty and the occasional splashes of colour pages, this book will create awareness for regular bowel cancer health checks.

Creator and Sydney-based hairdresser Michael Wolff is a long-standing and devoted client of De Lorenzo and is a former guest hair artist with the company. Michael has realised his dream of creating a beautiful coffee table book, revelling in the beauty of hair.

Created with photographer, James Mills, HAIR UNLIMITED celebrates Michael’s core values as a hair stylist, where the natural character of the hair is revealed through the hair stylist’s art and craft.

Michael has worked with De Lorenzo for many years which included directing many new season collections. It is very special to see his book come to life after the long process he went through putting it all together. It is wonderful for De Lorenzo to support him in this very meaningful and personal cause and we hope it raises much needed funds for research,” says De Lorenzo Marketing Manager, Bridget Bajada.

Having been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and going through treatment at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital, Michael decided he wanted to start creating awareness around regular health checks for our own health and well-being.

“I wanted to give something back to the incredible medical industry for further research, and this would also show my appreciation for the wonderful care I received at St Vincent’s,” says Michael.

“Deciding to create a beautiful hair book was my goal, and for photography, there was never a doubt that James Mills was the man for the job - from here HAIR UNLIMITED was born.”

Michael & James worked together mapping and planning out the project with the aim of achieving a sense of timeless appeal with natural hair styling and corrective makeup.

A true collaboration, James would inspire Michael with fabulous lighting as he created 3 different studio set-ups each time.

“James truly motivated me to move the hair and tell a story within the way I would use my hands or to even put some wind through the hair creating real life moments. I took on the art direction and lay outs for the book, with James and another great creative friend, Julie Ewington, helping to oversee each stage of the process.”

After a period of many months, all shoots were completed. There was a bank of 2300 images needed to be edited down to 173 looks, however with the help of James and Julie the task became less daunting.

Says James, “HAIR UNLIMITED has been more than I could have hoped for. I love shooting hair; there is so much potential in the shapes and textures. It can be solid or semi-transparent in the shot and details of the models’ faces can be partially hidden or framed by it.”

“The thing I love most about this book is it felt like a creative blank canvas that Michael and I jammed to; he would bring out the hairstyle he’d created and I’d come up with the lighting compositional style to complement it.”

As COVID-19 hit Sydney and lockdown occurred, the production process for the book was slowed.

“It’s now 2021. I have made a great recovery from Stage 3 cancer and I have a book – HAIR UNLIMITED – ready to go,” says Michael.

HAIR UNLIMITED is a limited edition book available through selected bookstores and Michael Wolff Salon. Retailing for $130, all proceeds will be donated to the Curran Foundation for future bowel cancer research at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital.
