Hair Care Insider - Exclusive Tips & Tricks

Posted by De Lorenzo Education Team on 1st May 2025

With misinformation rampant all over the internet, it has become increasingly difficult to make sense of everything, especially when it comes to home hair care dos and don’ts. There’s so much conflicting advice, making it harder for people to know what’s right for their hair.

Today, we will explore some of the most commonly made home haircare mistakes and share tips on how to avoid them!

One of the most frequent mistakes is over-washing hair. Good news dry shampoo lovers! Not only does frequent washing lead to colour fading faster, but it also strips the scalp of its natural oils.

Washing with shampoos that contain harsh ingredients and an imbalanced pH (not a problem if you are using De Lorenzo!) can worsen scalp irritation. To prevent this, wash your hair only when it is oily, not just out of habit, and use pH-balanced products suited to your scalp’s needs.

Another major issue is heat damage, which is one of the leading causes of hair breakage. This can easily be prevented by using a heat protectant, such as De Lorenzo’s Extinguish, which shields hair up to 230°C. Lowering the temperature on your hot tools or using them less frequently can also help reduce damage.

Lastly, hair is most fragile when wet. The swelling of the hair shaft and opening of the cuticle can cause breakage, so treat wet hair gently with a microfiber towel and use a wide-tooth comb or soft detangling brush. Avoid going to bed with wet hair to prevent friction-induced breakage.

DIY Hair Colouring: When to Try It and When to See a Professional

DIY hair colouring can be a wonderful way to refresh your look, but it is important to know when it is safe and when it is not. DIY colouring is safe for simple tasks like adding fun colours to your hair using semi-permanent dyes such as NovaSemi or NovaFusion. These products do not require a developer and instead attach to the outside to the hair strand.

Why does it matter that these products do not need a developer? To put it simply it means that the product does not require the chemical reactions needed to penetrate the hair shaft to work. Which greatly reduces the risks of chemical burns to the skin or damaged hair, both of which can easily happen when certain professional hair products are used by someone who is inexperienced.

Instead, these products work by simply adding colour pigment to a carrier such as conditioner or shampoo so they are perfectly safe for home use. Whilst they may not be as vibrant on hair that is not pre lightened they are still a fun way to add temporary colours to your hair whilst also giving it a treatment at the same time. Just be wary the more unnatural colours like Green may last longer than expected and can sometimes be harder to get out of the hair!

    Happy colouring!
